Modesty

In this article, I am going to talk about two questions regarding modesty.

  1. Is the need for being modest overrated?
  2. Is Modesty good?

Firstly, is modesty overrated? The fact is that modesty is very important for people to give proper appreciation for a person’s achievements. The shear lack of humbleness wears away the glory the person deserves. Of course, this is not always the case but I think everyone will admit that they have encountered such demand of self-deglorification at some point in their life. Self praise is not such a bad thing unless it becomes pride. I think self praise and content are necessary for the individual’s progress and for him to be in a position to help others. Lack of modesty is often mistaken for vanity. It is for this reason people go out of their way to appear modest to the point that it has now become a conversational norm.

But, there is a reason why modesty is a good characteristic. Modesty is the first step towards achieving mental piece. It is absolutely necessary for letting go of your ego which is the root cause for most of the evils. Modesty is not lack of pride, it is what remains when you let go of your ego. That is a state where you are completely content with what you are.

The Eternal Shine

Like the blazing wildfire
with its threat dire
make sure this you hear
which brings in the minds
of the deceitful fear
Take this to your heart dear
for there is nothing else
more worthy of revere
The glory of the knowledge spreads
as you share it with your peer.

Funny or cynical?

Suppose you make up a joke and want to share it with someone. If you say that you made up the joke, people will not find it funny unless you are a popular comedian. Even many comedians narrate their jokes as though it happened to somebody else. Although I am sure that they are modifying the facts. Now why is this case? I cannot get an answer to this question without being cynical. Are they jealous that you are funny? But envy is not convincing enough to explain this behavior or rather maybe I don’t want to believe it. Maybe I am not cynical enough. But I cannot fail to ignore the fact that the only way you can make someone laugh by saying something about yourself is by ridiculing yourself.

It is also possible to be funny by ridiculing a third person, like someone you dislike. But more often it might as well be one of our friends. Sometimes, we just laugh at how silly one of our friends can be. But is it always so? Why is ridiculing our friends funny? The unscrupulous act of ranting off about your friends on careful scrutiny unravels the dark emotions hidden inside. And if these emotions are not faced under the scorching wrath of our own conscience, they can make us a bad person even by our own standards. If we think about it, there are three main reasons why we may indulge ourselves in such an act:

  1. We are euphemistically putting out a condescending remark about that person.
  2. We are angry that he/she thinks he/she is better than ourselves or at least, that’s what we think.
  3. Or the worst, we think we are better than him/her.

Of course, the above points are not always true, but when they are, they are worth contemplation.

Geeks have fun too!!!

I just realized as I am typing in Microsoft word, All the swear words which I can think of are actually in the dictionary. I did not get that wavy underlining that you get when you type a new word. Microsoft actually recognizes the word “motherfucker”! Really! You can try it if you want. It also recognizes bitch, crap, asshole, tramp, slut and many other things which are not appropriate even for this blog. The engineers who compiled the Microsoft dictionary sure had their cut of fun. And surprisingly and somewhat unrelated to this topic, the word “blog”, it does not recognize.

Intersting Point (by me)

Be completely honest to yourself and you will speak the truth.

Interesting point (by me)

We did not bring anything with us nor will we take any. That is why we must try our best to leave our ass-prints in as many places as we can.

Literally......

We have complicated our language with so many indirect statements, idioms, slang and jargon that a guy who starts taking things literally will literally go crazy. And this guy can be grossly misinterpreted if he starts talking to people literally. For instance, this guy tells someone, “I will kick you in the ass”. The other poor guy did not see what was coming. A woman says to him “Fuck you asshole”, and he goes “yaaaiiii”. And needless to say we get thrown into a whole new dimension about swearing literally. You get really pissed off when someone calls you “motherfucker”, imagine how pissed off this guy will get. When some guy sighs in disappointment “Fuck me”, he says “dude, I don’t do that to guys”. And we finally get an answer to the question “Who let the dogs out?”….. and the answer is “That guy”.

Slow and steady???

"Slow and steady wins the race. Fast and steady kicks ass."

Humor by surprise

One of the very effective way of making jokes is to say outrageous things which people don't expect. But ofcourse, you have to be careful not to offend anyone. For example, look at this clip

Endangered culture

The best way to preserve a culture is to understand it rather than just being proud of it. Of course, I am referring to the great and supposedly famous Indian culture.

Different regions have different customs proving they are ways of behavior rather than requirements of religion or god.

Customs followed blindly are susceptible to immense corruption. Social traditions die out when they lose their meaning. Only a small fragment of customs are followed and those that survived happen to be either made up for selfish needs or those that benefit a specific segment of the population. most of customs are lost merely because people stopped to understand and appreciate their meaning. Many don't even know why they are doing certain things and are surprisingly proud about it. They fail to see how much they are missing without even attempting to appreciate their social customs.

The systems that survive are the ones that evolve continuously based on the surrounding situations. If they fail to evolve, they stop fulfilling the basic needs and go extinct. There are all kinds of examples, the eco systems, the economic systems, constitutions, educational systems. social traditions die out when they lose their meaning.

Religion and God

Atheists identify themselves as non-believers of God. As a non-believer myself, I completely support their view. But I should point out that whether you belive in some concept strongly depends on how you interpret it. Needless to say, almost all the paradoxes and contradictions are resolved by correcting the interperetations and the premises assumed. I would like to quote Ayn rand in this context: "Condratictions do not exist. If you face one, check your premises".

The main questions I am trying to answer is this: What does the concept of God got to do with religion? Why do atheists tend to renounce religion? It is of my view that being an atheist does not mean renouncing one's religion. Saying this raises an important question. What does renouncing one's religion mean or more fundamentally, what does it mean to belong to a particular religion? Does belonging to a particular religion mean believing in the God that religion claims to exist?

If you think carefully, there is an easy explanation. The concept of "God" is never a premise of any religion or at least, it was not intended to be. Every religion has at its core, an anthropological philosophy and more than worth studying about. Each religion tries to explain the human nature, how we behave or should behave with each other, how to build our character, what are moral values and so on.

Now, I will try to answer some of the raised questions.

What does the concept of God got to do with religion?
God has nothing to do with religion. Is the concept of God really needed to explain the philosophy? well, to explain, we don't. But, "God" serves some crucial purposes when it comes to making people believe and follow the religion (philosophy). To keep this post brief, I stop here. See my posts following this to see further explanations.

Why do atheists tend to renounce religion?
The main problem that atheists have is that they think religions are based on the incredible premise of God which of course can be viewed in many ways as irrational. It is God that they don't believe in and extrapolate that disbelief to disregard the philosophy of the religion as a whole. This brings me to the next question..

What does it mean to belong to a religion?
The answer is simple. It means that you form your values, behavior, and your social customs based on the philosophy that religion stands for.

Greatness

Some men born great,
some achieve greatness,
and some have greatness thrust upon then
.... and most people just dont understand what greatness means.
