Modesty

In this article, I am going to talk about two questions regarding modesty.

1. Is the need for being modest overrated?
2. Is Modesty good?

Firstly, is modesty overrated? The fact is that modesty is very important for people to give proper appreciation for a person’s achievements. The shear lack of humbleness wears away the glory the person deserves. Of course, this is not always the case but I think everyone will admit that they have encountered such demand of self-deglorification at some point in their life. Self praise is not such a bad thing unless it becomes pride. I think self praise and content are necessary for the individual’s progress and for him to be in a position to help others. Lack of modesty is often mistaken for vanity. It is for this reason people go out of their way to appear modest to the point that it has now become a conversational norm.

But, there is a reason why modesty is a good characteristic. Modesty is the first step towards achieving mental piece. It is absolutely necessary for letting go of your ego which is the root cause for most of the evils. Modesty is not lack of pride, it is what remains when you let go of your ego. That is a state where you are completely content with what you are.
